A Gentlemen's Absinthe Evening
Chris, James and Gawain came by on Friday night for a evening of Absinthe drinking. We chose to consume it in the Bohemian style - pouring it through a sugar cube, setting the cube alight and then dousing it with water. Absinthe is a wonderful and unfairly maligned drink.
The brand we drank on Friday was particularly good: "Absinte", 55% proof, from France and going for almost a hundred dollars a bottle.
Obviously, we all got diabolically drunk.
There shall be another such night come winter. Hopefully, the remaining two gentlemen who couldn't make it this time (Absinthe without leave) will be in attendance.

Absente isn't real absinthe, and you shouldn't burn real absinthe. By all means, burn drinks that don't taste good, but what is the point of burning something you paid good money for?
Right, so Absente - not being real absinthe - is okay to burn?
A large part of the attraction to absinthe is the ritual of the preparation. It really adds something to the experience to pour it through the sugar cube and then watch the sugar crackle and brown. It raises the evening above just sitting around and drinking for the sake of it.
It is a shame Absente isn't real absinthe, I spent quite some time talking to the salesman at one of the better liquor stores in town, and he recommended Absente as being the best one.
I've so far tried Doubs and Mr Jeckyll absinthes. The former being quite nice, the latter not so much.
I seem to have only about four brands left to try in this country.
